What Is a BCBA?

The credential behind your child's ABA program — and why supervision quality shapes outcomes.

The credential

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst holds a graduate degree, has completed extensive coursework in behavior analysis, accumulated supervised fieldwork hours, and passed a national board exam — with ongoing ethics requirements and continuing education to maintain certification. In ABA, the BCBA is the architect: assessing your child, designing the program, analyzing the data, and adjusting treatment.

The team around them

RBTs (Registered Behavior Technicians) deliver most session hours under BCBA supervision — they're the hands-on teachers your child spends the most time with. Some teams include BCaBAs (assistant-level analysts) between the two. When you evaluate providers, the ratio question matters: how much BCBA time actually touches your child's program each week?

What a good BCBA does for your family

Beyond program design, a strong BCBA translates data into plain language, trains you in the strategies that work, coordinates with schools and other providers, and treats your priorities as the program's north star. At Bridgeway, BCBAs also tap an integrated bench — psychologists, therapists, and prescribers on the same team — when a child's needs cross specialty lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my child's therapist a BCBA?

Day-to-day sessions are usually delivered by RBTs; the BCBA supervises, designs, and adjusts the program. Both roles are essential — ask how they divide time in any program you consider.

How do I verify a BCBA's certification?

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board maintains a public registry where you can verify any BCBA or RBT credential.
