Transitioning to Kindergarten With Autism

The biggest transition of early childhood, turned into a plan instead of a cliff.

The spring before: paperwork season

If your child has an IEP through preschool special education, transition planning should start in winter/spring — request the kindergarten transition meeting early. No IEP yet? Request a school evaluation in writing now; timelines run long. Share your private evaluations (Bridgeway reports are built for this) and visit candidate classrooms while decisions are still open.

The summer: skills and stories

Target the skills that make day one survivable: following two-step group directions, transitioning when a timer ends, asking a new adult for help, managing lunchbox and bathroom logistics. Bridgeway's school-readiness programming drills exactly these. Add a photo 'social story' of the actual school — the door, the classroom, the teacher if possible — and read it casually all summer.

The first weeks: shrink the unknowns

Ask for a meet-the-teacher visit before day one and a consistent drop-off ritual from day one. Expect after-school restraint collapse — the held-together child who detonates at home is regulating, not regressing; build in decompression time. Keep a short feedback loop with the teacher for the first month: one email a week beats a crisis meeting in October.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should we delay kindergarten a year?

Sometimes valuable, sometimes not — it depends on your child's profile and what the alternative year offers. Bring the question to your evaluation feedback session; it deserves data, not folklore.

Can Bridgeway talk to the school?

With your permission, yes — our clinicians share reports and consult with school teams to support IEP planning and classroom strategies.
