The Utah Parent's IEP Guide

The school meeting where preparation changes outcomes — here's how the process works and how to walk in strong.

What an IEP is (and isn't)

An Individualized Education Program is a legal document under IDEA entitling an eligible student to specially designed instruction, services, and measurable goals. It differs from a 504 plan, which provides accommodations without specialized instruction. Autism is one of the eligibility categories in Utah schools; a medical diagnosis supports but doesn't automatically confer school eligibility — the school runs its own evaluation.

The process, step by step

(1) Request evaluation in writing — dates trigger legal timelines. (2) The school evaluation team assesses across suspected areas of need. (3) An eligibility meeting reviews results. (4) If eligible, the team writes the IEP: present levels, measurable annual goals, services and minutes, accommodations, placement. (5) Annual reviews update it; you can request a meeting anytime things aren't working.

How outside reports strengthen the case

Schools must consider outside evaluations — and a thorough private autism or ADHD evaluation often documents needs a school screening misses. Bridgeway's evaluation reports are written with school teams in mind, and with your permission our clinicians can share recommendations or consult with your child's team. You never have to walk into that meeting alone.

Your rights in two sentences

You are an equal member of the IEP team: you can request evaluations, bring anyone you want to meetings, disagree in writing, request independent evaluations at district expense under defined conditions, and invoke dispute options. The Utah Parent Center offers free advocacy help, and using it is normal, not nuclear.

Frequently Asked Questions

The school says my child is 'doing fine.' Now what?

Request evaluation in writing anyway — 'passing grades' doesn't equal 'no educational need,' especially for masked autism or anxiety. Outside documentation helps establish need.

IEP or 504 — which should I ask for?

If your child needs specialized instruction or services, pursue IEP eligibility; if they need accommodations only, a 504 may fit. Evaluation results guide the choice.
