Sensory Strategies at Home
You don't need a therapy gym in your basement. You need a handful of moves that fit your actual house.

Start by mapping, not fixing
For one week, note when sensory storms happen: time, place, sensory environment, what preceded. Patterns emerge fast — it's the bathroom fan, the scratchy uniform, the post-school pileup. Strategy beats willpower once you know the triggers.
Environment tweaks that cost nothing
Dim the after-school lights. Offer headphones for errands. Cut the tags. Warm the towel. Create one predictable low-stimulation corner — a beanbag and a blanket behind a couch counts. Reduce ambient chaos during meals: fewer competing noises, simpler plates.
Regulating input on purpose
Many kids settle with deep pressure (bear hugs, pillow squishes, heavy blanket), rhythmic movement (swinging, rocking, wagon rides), or chewing (crunchy snacks, chewable jewelry). Offer these before hard transitions rather than after the storm — proactive beats reactive every time.
When home strategies aren't enough
If sensory responses still limit meals, sleep, school, or family life after consistent environmental support, bring in professionals. Bridgeway's evaluations clarify what's sensory, what's behavioral, and what's anxiety — and our ABA and therapy teams build plans that respect sensory needs rather than overriding them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are weighted blankets safe?
For most children beyond toddlerhood, appropriately sized weighted blankets used with adult awareness are considered low-risk — follow manufacturer weight guidance and never use them with infants.
Is this occupational therapy?
These are general supportive strategies, not OT treatment. An occupational therapist can build an individualized sensory plan; Bridgeway coordinates with outside OTs our families work with.
