What each one actually does
Speech-language therapy is delivered by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and targets the mechanics and structure of communication: articulation, language comprehension, sentence-building, feeding and swallowing, and social language. ABA is delivered by behavior analysts (BCBAs) and technicians, and targets behavior and skill-building broadly — communication among them — using reinforcement-based teaching.
The overlap is real: both may teach a nonverbal child to request. The difference is scope and method. SLPs go deeper on speech and language systems; ABA wraps communication inside a bigger behavioral program covering daily living skills, challenging behavior, social skills, and learning readiness.
Which one first — or both?
For an autistic child with delayed communication plus behavioral or skill needs, ABA is typically the insurance-funded core program, with speech therapy layered alongside. For a speech-only delay with no other differences, an SLP alone may be the right call. Many Bridgeway families run both, and our BCBAs coordinate goals with outside SLPs so the systems match.
