Psychologist vs. Psychiatrist: Who Does Your Child Need?

The two most-confused titles in children's mental health, untangled in plain language.

5× Best Behavioral/Mental Health Treatment in Southern Utah · Voted #1 in Utah 6 years running · CASP 2026 Platinum Sponsor

The short version

Psychologists hold doctoral training in psychological science (PhD/PsyD). They perform testing and evaluations — autism, ADHD, learning differences — and many provide therapy. They do not prescribe medication.

Psychiatrists and psychiatric prescribers come from the medical side. They evaluate whether medication could help, prescribe it when appropriate, and manage it over time. Most see patients for evaluation and medication follow-ups rather than weekly therapy.

In practice, many children see both — plus a therapist for weekly counseling. The question isn't which one is better; it's which job needs doing right now: answers (testing), skills (therapy), or medication questions (psychiatry).

Why one roof beats three offices

When the tester, the therapist, and the prescriber work at unrelated practices, parents become the messenger service. At Bridgeway, psychological testing, counseling, ABA, and psychiatric medication management share one team and one record — so the psychiatrist sees the testing results and the therapist's notes before making medication decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should evaluate my child for autism or ADHD?

Comprehensive autism and ADHD testing is psychologist territory. If medication questions follow, a psychiatric prescriber joins the picture — at Bridgeway, on the same team.

Does my child need a psychiatrist for anxiety?

Usually therapy (CBT) comes first for pediatric anxiety, with psychiatry added if symptoms remain severe. Bridgeway offers both, coordinated.
